Specifically, occupational therapists assist people in participating to their highest potential in daily life activities that occupy their time. For adults, work, leisure, or family activities may be the focus. For children, these commonly include\u2014<br \/>\u2022 School Activities\u2014 handwriting, coloring, drawing, cutting, organizing materials, staying calm &amp; alert<br \/>\u2022 Following routines<br \/>\u2022 Transitioning to different activities<br \/>\u2022 Family\/Community Activities\u2014 handling meal times, grocery stores, parks, fast food restaurants, birthday parties, etc.<br \/>\u2022 Play\u2014 object manipulation, motor\/physical skills, social skills<br \/>\u2022 Self-Care\u2014 dressing, eating, brushing teeth, bathing<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"eval\"><\/a>Evaluations<\/strong><br \/>An evaluation examines the difficulties a client is having with performing daily activities in relation to relevant factors such as his\/her skills, environmental conditions, disease\/disability, and habits\/routines. Assessment tools may include a combination of the following\u2014<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Family Report (Interview\/Questionnaire)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Teacher Report (Interview\/Questionnaire)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Observations of Performance in Daily Activities<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Clinical Observations<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Touch Inventory for Elementary School-Aged Children<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Beery Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration (Beery VMI)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS) Client Interview<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Review of Medical\/Educational Records<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Review of Work Samples<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Test of Visual-Perceptual Skills (TVPS)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Quick Neurological Screening Test (QNST)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Sensory Profile questionnaire<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Sensory Processing Measure<\/p>\n<p>A report is written to document the findings of the evaluation process. To meet your needs, a variety of therapy options are available\u2014<br \/>\u2022 Ongoing direct treatment with the child, usually 1-3 times per week with home and school visits in the local area as needed<br \/>\u2022 Short-term intensive treatment during school breaks\/vacations, 3-5 times per week<br \/>\u2022 Individual consultation to set up home strategies and a program the child will carry out at home with ongoing monitoring &amp; follow-up consultation available as needed<\/p>\n<p>Common intervention strategies include\u2014<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Therapeutic Activities to Improve Function in identified areas of need<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Sensory Integrative Techniques&#8211;providing the child with controlled combinations of sensory input in ways that challenge the child and playfully motivate the child to actively engage<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Cognitive Skills Development\/Training to build insight and ways to compensate for weaknesses<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Therapeutic Exercises<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Neuromuscular Re-education to retrain balance, etc.<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Self-Care Training<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Family\/Client Training for home program (practice\/carry-over)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Adaptive Equipment\/Materials as needed<br \/>\u2022\u00a0School and Home visits as needed<br \/>\u2022 Telehealth via secure video conferencing or phone is available as an alternative to office visits for clients located in California<\/p>\n<p><strong><a name=\"pres\"><\/a>Presentations &amp; Community Outreach<\/strong><br \/>Dr. Spitzer speaks to community organizations on topics including:<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Learning\/Improving Writing Legibility and Speed<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Organization Strategies<br \/>\u2022\u00a0Attention Strategies (sensory-based)<br \/>\u2022\u00a0The Foundation of Sensory-Motor Activities for Being Ready to Learn<\/p>\n<p><b>Professional Training, Mentorship, and Consultation<br \/><\/b>\u2022 Consultation with occupational therapists, other professionals, schools, clinics, and other organizations for program and staff development.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Developmentally-Based Skill Training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Spitzer provides training to adolescents and adults for developing and\/or maintaining skills that maximize their participation and independence for home and community. Training is tailored to the client\u2019s individual needs and preferences and may be provided to the client, caregivers, family, and\/or peers. Commonly addressed skills include\u2014 self-help, home care, social interaction, leisure, and community mobility\/transportation. These services are designed for those individuals who need repeated, nuanced practice to build these applied skills.
